After 3 month of work we published the Siivouspäivä iOS and Android apps shortly before Siivouspäivä on 25th of May 2013.
The process of app development started during the Siivouspäivän digitaalkoot /hackaton in March 2013, where developers and designers form different schools of Aalto met with Siivouspäivä activists to develop concepts and initial prototypes for the Siivouspäivä app. During the hackathon we identified together that the way-finding functionality would be most essential for the app.
Afterwards two groups continued working the two apps (Android and iOS): Fabian Häusler (MA student in New Media, Media Lab, Aalto ARTS) designed and developed the iOS app and Mesbahul Islam (MA student in Computer Science at Aalto SCI) and Ahsan Feroz (MA student in Geoinformatics, Aalto ENG) worked with User Interface design input from Suse Miessner on the Android version.
During the hackathon we had developed the basic app concept, decided on the functionalities and designed first screenshots and interactions. The screenshots had to be updated afterwards to be readable on the small mobile screens. First we designed for iOS and as a second step adapted to Android requirements (e.g., menu bar on top). The developers got the functions coded rather easily but working on the small details took a lot more efforts afterwards.
Have a look at the screenshots from the current iOS app:
